Student Loan Scams
Student loans can serve as a means for a
student to get the higher education he or she has always dreamed of and wanted.
Their potential benefits of student loans can be amazing so long as the
repayment of the student loan is handled with responsibility and care.
Unfortunately, there are countless student loan scams that are taking place in
the United States and other countries. These student loan scams have an
incredible impact on various people and can be difficult to detect.
There are many different student loan scams used today. However, student scams
typically are in one of two forms. With the first type of student loan scam, the
student’s identity is stolen by another person. The person then uses the
information that he or she has stolen to take out a large amount of student
loans. This is similar to identity theft with credit cards. As you may know, it
can be extremely difficult to prove that the loans were not taken out for their
proper purposes if they are under your name. This has the potential to leave the
student with a large amount of debt that he or she does not deserve. If the
student is unable to resolve the situation completely, he or she may not be able
to attend the college or university that they prefer due to their lack of funds.
In the worst situations, the student will not be able to attend college or other
form of higher education at all.
The other form of student loan scams involves the college or university and a
student loan lender. In this particular scam a lender will strike a deal with a
college or university. Their agreement will require the school to persuade
students to choose the lender that is in on the scam. In return, the lender will
be provided with more customers or borrowers and the school or administrators
will receive an item of value, such as money or other gifts. This type of scam
prevents the students from having a wide variety of student loans to choose
from. This form of student loan scam is very difficult to detect and may go
unnoticed. As a student or parent, being aware of what lenders you are entitled
to can help prevent this type of student loan scam from occurring. Be sure to
ask questions regarding the school’s list of lenders. You can never be too
careful.
Student loan scams are extremely ruthless to say the least. Often times, they
prey on people that are in desperate situations. College and higher education is
expensive and these criminals take advantage of students, parents, or both that
are trying their hardest to pay for it. Avoid phone calls that come from unknown
numbers attempting to promote student loans. Remember, it is much easier for
them to pull off the scam over the phone when you cannot see them face to face.
Being aware of student loans and the reputable ones that are available will help
prevent a scam from occurring that can ruin your financial future.
